Welcome to Reform Hypnotherapy. I’m Rebecca and I’m a therapist providing psychological support to adults in Kent and online.
I’m Rebecca and I’m a Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapist. I have also spent the last decade working as a Mental Health Nurse. Working with people to support them in improving and managing their mental health and wellbeing has always been a passion of mine, and sitting with people in uncomfortable, challenging or distressing situations has always been a feature of my career. I chose to become a hypnotherapist when a family member had hypnotherapy and saw amazing results in a very short time frame. I knew this was something I wanted to be able to help others achieve for themselves.
I have a Level 5 Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy from the UK College of Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy. The diploma is approved by the British Psychological Society, the leading professional body for psychologists in the UK. I am a member of the National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH) and the National Council for Integrative Psychotherapists (NCIP). This means that I am bound by their Code of Ethics and professional standards. I also have a BSc (Hons) in Mental Health Nursing and have spent the last decade working as a nurse across a variety of clinical areas.
When you’re looking for support it can be overwhelming trying to work out which approach is right for you and navigate a whole new world of terminology!
In simple terms, Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy (CBH) is an evidence based therapy. This means it has been studied in clinical research and shown to be effective. There’s no ‘woo woo’ here. If you are hoping I can swing a pocket watch in front of your eyes and make your problem disappear, then I’m afraid I’m not the therapist for you. You have an important and active role in therapy to make the changes you would like to see.
CBH can help with a range of problems. These include stress and anxiety, phobias, confidence and self-esteem, social anxiety, performance (like sports, exams, interviews) and habits such as smoking, nail biting, skin picking, hair pulling and eating to name a few.
The way CBH works is by looking at the way our thoughts, feelings and behaviours interact in problem areas. This is based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). Once we have a shared understanding of this for you on an individual level, we can begin to look at how we can work on each area to produce a different outcome. Much of this work is done through talking and then using hypnosis to enhance and strengthen this.
I offer a FREE 15 minute phone consultation so you have the opportunity to have an informal chat before committing to an Initial Consultation session.
During the Initial Consultation session we will meet face to face to discuss your problem in more detail, your goals for therapy and confirm that CBH is a good fit for you. It’s also important for you to see if I’m the right therapist for you as this is a crucial aspect of the effectiveness of the therapy. Initial Consultations are £40 and last 60 minutes.
Treatment sessions are £80 and last 60 minutes. Generally we will meet regularly at the same day and time each week to begin with.
As therapy progresses, we may begin to meet less frequently so you can begin to practice implementing all that we have discussed but still having support to troubleshoot any difficulties that come up.
Sessions involve both talking and hypnosis. Hypnosis is used to rehearse and practice skills that we have identified would be helpful through discussion during each session. You will also need to commit to some in between session tasks to strengthen and inform the work that we do in sessions. This should be an insightful experience though so try not to think of this as a chore!
We will also look at ways that you can learn self hypnosis and I will provide you with recordings to listen to in between session.
This is a really common fear and misconception around hypnosis, largely due to stage hypnosis acts. But fortunately, the answer is absolutely not! Hypnosis has no special ability to make you do anything that you would not otherwise do in your daily life. You are fully in control and aware of everything that is going on around you and what is being said at all times. You choose whether to accept and respond to suggestions or whether to ignore them.
Again, absolutely not! This has never happened and would not be possible in the way hypnosis works. You are in control at all times and would be free to jump up and walk about at any time if you chose to do so (although when you are in a state of complete relaxation you probably won’t want to!)
Anyone who wants to be hypnotised, can be hypnotised. If you don’t want to be hypnotised, you can’t be!
Some conditions require additional consideration before commencing or are not recommended for hypnotherapy. These include severe clinical depression with thoughts of self harm or suicide, people with a diagnosis of a personality disorder, migraine or epilepsy or a history of psychosis.
This is an understandable question that many people have when they access therapy. It is difficult to give broad generalisations because everyone is different, however most people average between 4 and 8 sessions. We will generally begin meeting weekly, and then as things progress, and to give you an opportunity to begin to implement the things we have discussed, we may move to less frequent sessions.
Sessions are made up of a mix of talking, which is based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and hypnosis to enhance and strengthen the techniques. Some sessions may have little to no hypnosis and others may utilise hypnosis more frequently. However, I will always be led by you as to what you find most helpful. I will also provide you with audios to listen to in between sessions to further enhance the work we are doing in sessions towards your goals.
Having an open mind, being committed to the process and motivated to achieve your goal are important factors in how successful therapy will be. More importantly though, research has consistently shown that the client-therapist relationship is the most important predictor of success in therapy. This is why I offer the free 15 minute call and the reduced rate face to face Initial Consultation so that we can meet and you can see how you feel before you fully commit to sessions.
I work from Maidstone, Kent and often see people from Allington, Barming, Aylesford, Wateringbury, West Malling, Kings Hill, Bearsted, Weavering, Penenden Heath, Coxheath, and Loose. Full location details will be provided when we arrange our therapy sessions.
In addition to face-to-face therapy, I also offer telephone and online therapy sessions via Zoom for clients across Kent and beyond. Please feel free to get in touch to learn more about how online therapy works.
